Training on community resilience in Riyom L.G.A

In the month of November the training on COMMUNITY RESILENCE for community members took place under the Reconciliation component of the project; a total number of 42 participants were in attendance, the participants were taken from 16 communities within Riyom LGA. The training is aimed at strengthening their resilience nature and knowing the key ways on how to get over trauma as well as tools to effective conflict, early warning reporting and disaster management mechanism.

Inter-Faith Dialogue training for Religious Groups on Campuses

Training on interfaith/inter-cultural dialogue for religious groups on campuses was done, with 13 tertiary institutions from across Plateau state in attendance, the training was centered on the common things that bond us together rather than those that divide us. The training highlighted the role both religion and culture can play in promoting peaceful co-existence on campuses. Training was also carry-out for Parent teachers Association (PTA) in Jos South which is a continuation of the peace education training for PTA across the 5 project L.G.A; during the training participants expressed gladness as this is the first time training opportunity has been extended to members of the PTA.

Training For Media Practitioners

Training was carryout for media practitioners operating within Jos in collaboration with Nigeria Television Authority (NTA) on CONFLICT SENSITIVE REPORTING .Thirty eight media practitioners representing both electronic media, print media and online media were all present. The training was aimed at enhancing their skills on constructive reportage and conflict sensitive reporting for preventive platforms. Resource persons were drawn from across the media sector as well as peace-building experts.

Assesment and Evaluation By European Union

A representative from the European Union in the person of Dominica was in Jos, Plateau state on an evaluation and assessment visit. During her stay with Apurimac, she visited Apurimac vocational centre in Rantya, she also paid a visit to some communities were Apurimac has been working with especially under the EIDHR /2012/298-578 EU funded project. She took time to visit the Plateau state Ministry of Women Affairs were Apurimac have been working with in the areas of women empowerment and community peace-building. Dominica held a dinner meeting with some relevant key stakeholders both of Government and Communities, were they deliberated on vital issues aimed at deepening the peace-building process in the state.

The European union (EU) is supporting, consolidating and strengthening the peace building process in plateau state, through a programme tagged "support to peace building and conflict prevention in plateau state Nigeria" the programme funded by the EU under the instrument for stability (IFS) project. The project was launched on the 12th of September 2013 at crest hotel Jos together with sercah for common ground and GIZ. the launch brought together all key Stake holders cutting across all sectors in the state. this include :State Government officials, traditional rulers, religious leaders Academia, Women representative, security agencies Media (print and electronic) youth groups children, physically and challenged persons members of the civil society organizations and international development partners.

As part of the activities to ensure successful implementation Apurimac paid Advocacy Visit to some key Stake holders in the state so as to seek ways of possible collaboration. The visit was carried out to Plateau Sate ministry of education and ministry of women Affairs other places visited are National Directorate of employment (NDE), Plateau Radio Television Corporation (PRTV), Nigerian television Authority (NTA) and the Nigerian police Force.

The project implementation has commenced in earnest with training for school Administrators on peace education. so far 153 Schools administrators from Jos North, Jos south, Barkin ladi have undergone a 3 days workshop with some participating schools already forming peace clubs from skills acquired during the training. The Training has been carried out in four local government areas except Mikang which is coming up on the 17th to 19th October.

Training on Peace Education for Teachers carried out in the month of October under the education component

Training on Peace education was carried out for 190 teachers across the (5) LGA (Jos North, Jos South, Riyom, Barkin Ladi and Mikang) of our project action. The training for teachers started after the successful conclusion of the training for principals and administrators. The idea is to promote a culture of peace in our school through the creation of peace clubs and peace education teaching. Thirteen (13) schools amongst the 190 schools that benefited from the training has already set-up peace club with Islamic Orientation Private School, Barkin Ladi been the first club to be inaugurated by Apurimac. During the inauguration Mr Godwin Okoko, Country representative of Apurimac and other dignitaries present encouraged the students to inculcate the habit of peace in their hearts, homes and school, admonishing them to be worthy peace ambassador.

Visit by the musical icon TU- FACE Idibia to Apurimac.

As part of our efforts aimed at promoting community cohesion, discovering young talents as well as harness them, Apurimac hosted African Musical Icon and PEACE AMBASSADOR Innocent Idibia popularly known as TUFAZE IDIBIA. The visit was positive as he went to several communities across Jos North and Jos South encouraging the youths to be worthy peace ambassador, disabusing their minds from the intake of illicit drugs and drinks. He advised them never to allow themselves to be used by any shady politician for acts of violence especially during the upcoming local government election in the state.

Apurimac advocacy visit to Plateau State Universal Basic Education Board (PSUBEB)

Apurimac paid an advocacy visit to the Plateau State Universal Basic Education Board (PSUBEB), seeking ways of possible collaboration and partnership so as to join hands together in sustaining the peace-building process in Plateau state through the setting-up of peace desk in all schools and education secretariats across the state. The Chairperson of PSUBED assured Apurimac of their support as she applauded the idea behind the project; She appeal to Apurimac to consider the training for all Educational Secretaries (ES) across the state, while assuring us of their willingness to participated in the validation exercise for the peace club manual and the peace education curriculum.
